Useful online tool to convert RIS references to BibTex

Online Ris2Bib

I’ve been trying Docear (www.docear.org/) lately to make use of the built-in mind-map functions and to try and keep my research references more organised. I’m not 100 % sold on it yet, but it’s worth trying out.

Docear uses the BibTex format, which in itself isn’t a problem. However, since I’ve migrated away from EndNote I’ve noticed some journals (*cough* Nature *cough*) don’t allow the easy download of BibTex format references.

I wasn’t going to go through importing into EndNote, then exporting in the correct format, as I had done when I had made the switch to Docear. Instead, I came across this useful tool Online Ris2Bib to do the conversion instead. Thanks Dr Nicolas Bruot for making it!

Just open your .ris file with notepad++ or your preferred text editor, copy the text inside, paste it into the box and hit “Convert”. You can then copy the output and add it to your Docear reference library by pasting it into the BibTex Source of the new library entry. Easy!
